A brief history of dog food at the Home Made Pet Food blog.

In the 15,000 years since the dog has been domesticated, for all but the last 150 years, they have been feed a variety of grains, table scraps, pieces of meat and supplemental scavenging.

Around 1860 James Spratt put together a concoction of meat, vegetables, and wheat meal and began to sell it to the English huntsmen, for the first commercially available dog food.

In 1907 Englishman F.H. Bennett developed and began to market the infamous, Milk Bone dog biscuits.

At the conclusion of World War One canned dog food came on the market. By the end of World War Two pet food sales had reached the $200 Million mark.

By 1956 the extruded dog food industry began to hit the store shelves with bags of dry dog food. The pet food industry has grown to where it is to day at the $15 Billion dollar a year mark. With this growth has come concerns for the health of the pets eating the commercial product and an increasing interest in the process of Home Made Pet Food.
